Whiplash is a movie about a drummer (played by Miles Teller) whose singular focus is to be the best at what he does. He’s exceptionally talented. He’s exceptionally driven. And he’s exceptionally difficult to be around, especially if you’re the woman he’s dating. (Though not as impossible to be around as his abusive instructor, played by J.K. Simmons). Cosmopolitan.com spoke to Teller at last night’s Gotham Independent Film Awards, at which he was up for Best Actor, about how one might go about dating a man like his character.

In Whiplash, your character is kind of terrible to the girl he’s dating. He dumps her saying that she is going to become needy and he doesn’t have time for that. Do you think really talented men are awful to date?
I don’t know. You’d have to ask my girlfriend. She would probably agree with the latter part of that, yeah.

Really?
I don’t know. For me, I’m at a point — I think my 20s is the time where I should be selfish, you know? Because it’s a time to invest in yourself and go for [your] passions. For me, once [you] have kids and stuff, you take a step back. Your kids come before you, your wife comes before you, so I think [your 20s] is a valuable time to go after things, and, you know, listen to yourself.

So do you think in real life you’re not easy to date?
I think I’m a wonderful companion. [Laughs.]

What should a woman do if she’s dating a “genius”? Run the other way?
Ask my girlfriend. [Laughs.]

What do you think your girlfriend would say?
Patience. And lots of laughter.
